Painting Up Close

First time I have used oils in ages, first time in 2015. Part of our new #ArtTakesOnSi initiative over on Symbiartic on Scientific American Blogs. Won't show you what I'm making yet.

Oil on slate, using my favourite Micron brush, bent like a dental tool. These pics are mostly Gamblin Olive Green, Rembrandt Oxide Black and Winsor Newton Naples Yellow, my favourite colour. Photos with my iPhone 5, using an Olloclip macro lens. Some through the VSCOcam app afterward.

Juggling my full time job, writing for Symbiartic and freelancing my artwork while being a dad of two young kids and a husband to my amazing wife has been harder than anything else I've ever done. I either cannot sleep for. Worry or fall asleep way too fast from exhaustion. My health isn't great.

45 minutes of oil painting on the weekend felt healthy. Making changes is difficult on a tight schedule but I will keep trying. I need to work to make money. I need to create. I need to paint.

This piece, when finished, will appear on Symbiartic later this week.
